I can't believe that I started this blog almost 1 year ago. This year seems to have flown by. The boys are growing up so fast. But when I think about how long I have been waiting for my daughter the year seems to have dragged along. It's been over 2 years since we applied to become adoptive parents. A friend told me that someday I will look back and it won't seem so long. I pray that is true. I hope that I will be able to post some more progress soon! Until then I pray...
Dear Carolyn,
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned that this is a mission for you, and I wondered if Bethany has been giving you the special needs photos? While you have been waiting, we have accepted and adopted two wonderful 6 year old girls from the special needs list. Once you are registered in-country with a dossier, you are eligible to receive the list. Each month or so they put out about a dozen children. Sometimes the "need" is that the children are in a large group of sibs, or are older. We changed our home study to be able to adopt a 10 year old, but were not matched to her. Both our girls have FAS. One is very smart but about as hyper as can be, and the other is more even tempered, but a little more cognitively delayed. They are both learning English wonderfully, and after 6 months, know their numbers, colors and 1/2 the alphabet. Neither has attachment issues (one is more anxious in her attachment but loves us tons!). They both greet us with cries of joy every day, and we are delighted to have them. Both are physically healthy although we were warned of heart issues on their medicals that turned out to be incorrect. Maybe your wait will soften your heart and broaden your parameters? It did ours! When we started out in 2006 we said healthy, but after our Azerbaijan referral was found to have FAS, we researched the issue and decided to finish the adoption, only to have the country program shut down. So, when we switched to Lithuania, we were much more open to special needs. You and other families put in for a child from the list. They consider the families and match them up. We lost out on 2 bids before being matched to our daughter last August. But, we wanted two. Our 2d daughter had not been on the earlier list, but we were matched to her in September. We could have completed by Xmas, but due to a paperwork snag, traveled in February & had court in March of 2011. Our agency had neglected to have us put in the I-800 when we accepted the referral, so we lost our court date. So, ask about the special needs lists! Lots of adorable kids on them.

Sherry,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your post. We have been looking at the Special Needs list and have been open to the possibility. You'll have to check my October post. Although I wish I would have seen your post before and maybe the blow of having to bid would not have been so hard. It totally took me by surprise. Right now we are just praying that we are chosen.
